It’s my least favorite time of year and it’s already worse than usual.
Overly Familiar Ranting
In case you don’t know, I work in hospitality, which is a fancy way of saying I’m a server at a restaurant. This is where I receive 95% of my yearly income. I typically work erratic hours that allow me to also write without overextending myself.1 Without getting into the nitty gritty of my job, I will say that late spring in Chicago is by far the busiest time of the year, and my work hours increase by about 30% for about a month and a half. The end is in sight but I am getting burnt out.
Add to this my bike getting stolen from inside my locked apartment building, getting absolutely torn to shreds by the common cold, my best friend moving across the country, and an amalgam of other minor disturbances, and I am very excited for it to just be, like, 10 days from now. In the midst of all this, a part of me is absolutely desperate to just complain. All I want to do is expound wildly on the folk punks doing the Hitler salute or Ocean Vuong or that stupid Protect the Dolls shirt. I want to be bitchy and irrelevant.
Unfortunately, as much as I am biologically addicted to getting annoyed on the Internet, I figure that would be bad for my brain and also less fun to read than you might expect. So instead this post will be a STRICT POSITIVITY ZONE. I’ll talk about a bunch of things that I LIKE and BRING ME JOY. It will be a PLEASANT TIME full of RECOMMENDATIONS and FUN VIBES. Please join me.
